Grindcore Bracketology 2: Round 3

Round two creaks to a close, but this batch of matchups hardly seemed to phase you. This was one of the more lopsided lots of the whole shebang. Hopefully the choices get harder as we whittle away the chaff.

The Old Guard
The closest of the lot, but Gurn's extreme riffing demanded an extreme showdown as he snuck past Steer by 7-6.

The Innovators
You guys sent the Grindfather to the leaky, moldy retirement home with nary a look a back as you advanced Hull by a commanding 12-1 edge.

The Punks
You didn't look back in anger. You looked back in love, paying tribute to grindcore's past while telling grindcore's present to patiently bide its time. Heritage advances past Rasyid by 8-4.

The Technicians
No contest Burke ran the table with a perfect 11-0.

Shit is about to get serious now. Check out these brackets. These are the kinds of debates that ruin friendships and end marriages. This next round will determine who is king of each category. The clock stops on Sunday.

The Old Guard
3. Gurn (Brutal Truth) v. 4. Pintado (Terrorizer/Napalm Death/Resistant Culture)
Gurn and Pintado both picked up the thread from the first two Napalm Death records and pushed the grindcore formula forward to keep it from going stale at birth. Who gets to be king of them all?

The Innovators
2. Hull (ANb/Pig Destroyer/A.C.) v. 6. Papirmollen (Parlamentarisk Sodomi/PSUDOKU)
Two guys who relentlessly push themselves beyond grindcore convention with every project they undertake. Who does it better?

The Punks
2. Heritage (Assuck) v. 6. Beau (Insect Warfare)
This is a fascinating matchup. You'd arguably probably not have an Insect Warfare without an Assuck. But who best embodies that punk spirit that animates grind?

The Technicians
1. Matsubara (Mortalized/GridLink/Hayaino Daisuki) v. 3. Burke (Lethargy/Sulaco/Brutal Truth)
Two consummate musicians who never let technique get in the way of writing a good song. Which fretboard magician will rise above them all?

I'm so torn with Heritage advancing over Rasyid....I just don't know how to feel....

...Gurn. Sticks and stones man.
Who pushes grindcore's convention more and more with every release? Well that's easy, Papirmollen. Scott Hull is amazing and contributes more in a day to grind then any of us do, but he's treading a lot of old ground.
Beau. I mean, fuck. Insect Warfare, you know? They took everything and made it better!
Matsuraba. Hands down.

Neither
Indifferent
Beau
Matsubara

Pintado
World Downfall has better riffs then Extreme Conditions...

Hull
Prowler in the Yard is the best grindcore album of the 2000's and this man's riffing is an absolute essential to it.

Beau
I feel guilty because I listen and I guess enjoy IW more then Assuck, but Assuck was such a big band for me when I got into grindcore. I guess Beau's guitar work stands out more.

Matsubara
Seems like a joke that Burke's gotten this far.

Gurn

Hull

Beau

Matsubara - Tougher choice for me than most people seem to think. I almost want to give it to Burke in defense of his work, but Orphan is just too good.

Pintado rules
Hull drives you mad
Heritage crushes
Matsubara destroys

Wretched google reader has been neglectful in telling me when you post, better late than never though;

Old Guard: Pintado - Darker Days ahead is a blemish in what otherwise is one of the best guitar legacies ever.

Innovators: Hull - Can't remember who said it, but someone on G&P said that Psudoku is basically PS with a distortion pedal, kinda true so not really that innovative (although undeniably effective), whereas Hull is on a whole other playing field when it comes to innovation.

Punks: Beau - tough call, but Assuck has always been more memorable for their drum work.

Technicians: Matsubara - even if Matsubara only played in one of these three awesome bands he would still get my vote.

1. Gurn
Pintado's output dwindled, but Gurn's output just got more creative and out there with each release.

2. Hull
Papirmollen has got 2 or 3 awesome releases under his belt. But Hull has got 8 or 9 awesome releases.

3.
Same style and same attitude only a different era. Could flip a coin on this one. I abstain.

4. Burke
Matsubara's gonna win this one. Burke needs some love for his wackey/brutal guitar playing.

That's funny, he must've been drunk. I'm sure Andrew's already rigged everything anyway so he can have his next birthday with Gridlink at the local Chucky Cheese.

burke....too bad he's gonna lose this round, but i dont like matsubara's style...matsubara is a talented guitarist, but i find his riffs very forgettable, and repeated too much for as short as the album is.

good christ are both sporting defective ear sockets or what?

MATSUBARA WINS EVERYTHING!

Pintado: Just the better of the two i find

Innovators: Hull, it's scott fucking hull, need i say more?

Punks: Beau, i already have him picked as my personal favourite, i fucking love insect warfare. Assuck are great, don't ge tme wrong, but Beau wins by a mile.

Technicians: Matsubara. He's the better of the two. Still wish Rainwater had his spot though haha

Pintado, original shredder.
Hull, easy.
Heritage, unchallenged hate.
Matsubara, easy.

The next round will be tougher to call.

Gurn for sure.

Hull.

Heritage. I like IW, but Beau turned his back on grindcore. That being said, it IS hard to choose. But this isn't a choice between IW and Assuck, it's a choice between Heritage and Beau. I think Heritage was really a lot more impressive. He was a lot more innovative than Beau and wrote a lot of great songs.

Burke. Way better for stoned listening.

Gurn, Hull, Heritage, undecided.
I agree with WZAd about Heritage. Much respect to Beau, he may even be a better player, but I think the Heritage riffs are more pissed and mayhemic.
