Prowler in My Back Yard

The Washington Post sent an enterprising n00b reporter to prowl Maryland Deathfest, complete with a guided tour courtesy of Pig Destroyer. It's thoroughly engaging read that namechecks Napalm Death, Birdflesh, Triac and Richard Johnson/Enemy Soil along with an in depth profile of each member of the Virginia grind quartet. The only odd thing, the Post mentions Scott Hull joined a potty-mouthed Boston band whose name can't be reprinted in a family newspaper during his college years but fail to make any mention of Agoraphobic Nosebleed.
Unlike the usual "what's up with these freaks" story, this one actually tries to make some sense out of grind and death metal and actually makes all of the interviewees sound like reasonable, functional human beings. A must read.

extreme music is the kind of thing that you get or you don't get...it's impossible to explain to my family or coworkers the type of music i like.

This was an amazing article, really well written. I loved the little profiles about the PD guys and other VA/MD/D.C. bands. Also, the reactions of the MDF towards the journalist are classic, "you a narc, man?!?"

hahaha

saw PD with Repulsion, the band was very personable and friendly. Not too much of a surprise, but they were more than willing to bs with fans which was interesting.

Great read. Nice to see a relatively unbiased metal article from a non-metal publication.

the post actually has a really good history when it comes to these kinds of stories. about a decade or so ago back when i was in college they did a pretty interesting interview with emperor during their first american tour (circa anthems to the welkin at dusk, i think) that was really insightful and even handed considering the hysteria surrounding black metal at the time.

Come on, though, really, you'd think that he was doing something dangerous or god knows what hahah. Ignorant public perception aside, the article's good stuff. Gonzo journalism? ;) Sure. It ain't a pirate-reminiscent motorcycle gang that he was researching's all I'm saying.

Like, it's just punk rawk, man! :DD

Zmaj, it's just nice seeing an article that doesn't have snarky or off-color remarks about extreme metal.
