Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: April 17, 2009

I am a hot chocolate fiend.
The greatest gift my wife ever game me during our courting years was a really nice home hot cocoa maker. I love that machine. Each winter I fire it up just about nightly and guzzle a pot of gourmet chocolate by myself. And other than sending
Wilford Brimley into diabetic shock, I never expected my wintry addiction would have any serious health effects until my doc did a routine blood test during my most recent check up and cautioned me my calcium levels were off the charts. Barring an immediate change in diet, she said, I ran the risk of developing kidney stones. My dad caught a bad bout of the stones when I was a kid and I can honestly say, Carcass’ “Manifestation of Verrucose Urethra” from Reek of Putrefaction comes pretty damn close to describing the pain I witnessed. So for the inaugural Carcass calendar for 2009, let’s marvel at the sheer density of sesquipedalian verbiage the band managed to cram into a brief song that answers that age old question, Why does it burn when I pee?

Bloody hypertrophy of papillae spewing urethritis like urticaria
Septicaemia filled dermis scorched by acidic uric nocturia.
Verrucose urethra
Glutenous condyloma
Ureterocoeles excreting warm, decaying, cystic pemphigus
Gnawing at flesh with rancid uraturial lust.

Cystic – adj. pertaining to have cysts.
Pemphigus – n. any of several fatal skin diseases characterized by blisters on the skin and mucous membranes.
Uraturial – not a word, but presumably an adjective that means some how related to a hunger for urine.

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: Dec. 8, 2008

I think it’s pretty much a truism that Carcass fans go in for gory entertainment, but who knew the Catholics had the same perverse inclination? And who knew they beat Eli Roth to it by about 300 years?
While the Holy See today is more likely to be known for
impeding medical progress, letting the little children cum unto them and deny its store of magic crackers to people who think what a stranger does with their blastocyst is none of the goddamned business.
But it turns out there was a time nearly three centuries earlier when Catholics – at lest one Irish priest – actually had a fairly morbid sense of humor. Carcass may have thought themselves witty for the baby-devouring shenanigans of
Symphonies of Sickness banger “Embryonic Necropsy and Devourment,” but Irish priest Jonathan Swift had already been there and done that in his scathing 1729 “A Modest Proposal,” which suggests the destitute Irish eat their kids to stave off hunger and reduce their financial burdens.
“A child will make two dishes at an entertainment for friends; and when the family dines alone, the fore or hind quarter will make a reasonable dish, and seasoned with a little pepper or salt will be very good boiled on the fourth day, especially in winter.”
I’m already cruising
Allrecipes.

...Aborted gestation...foetal mutilation......
Abortive secretions...embryonic fermentation...
Your crotch spawning afterbirth
A congealing sprog basted in cess
Palpitations spew a foetus
Sprawling in this mess...
Flowing lochial discharge
Of copious womb lining torn
The mutilated still-born mangled
By the whiplashing umbilical cord...
Mixing together post-natal juices
The dead infant used as stock
Slurping this horrendous concoction
Eat the cervical slop...
Ladling out aborted debris
Oozing guts chomped in your maw
The caesating premature baby
Nurtured in post-partum gore...
Suck cess on a plate, lick its pus from a spoon
Gnaw at rashes on a dish, munch on the expelled womb...
Its testicles incised - the foetus liquidized
Whisk the parasite - the gross remains baptized...
Stagnant placenta and smelly fluids
The stiffening dead babe's crib
Disemboweling and gutting
Grating bone and rib
Fragile limbs pulverized
Dismemberment is so cruel
Soggy organs and parturient broth
Give piquance to this sickly gruel...
Mixing together post-natal juices
The dead infant used as stock
Slurping this horrendous concoction
Eat the cervical slop...
Ladling out aborted debris
Oozing guts chomped in your maw
This ceasating premature baby
Nurtured in post-partum gore...
Drink bile from a cup, gulp its phlegm from a pot
Eat mucus on a saucer, choke on the embryonic clots...

Sprog – n. a child or a new military recruit.
Lochial – adj. of or relating to the liquid discharge following birth.
Caesetating – I found a reference to this word here, but I can’t glean any definition from it. So have at it.

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: Nov. 5, 2008

While we make much of Carcass’s innovative take on gore and grind and the band’s lingering reputation for over the top gross out humor, far too often we ignore the potential educational value lurking in songs like “Splattered Cavities.” Now you could lead your middle school anatomy class through yet one more repetition of “Dem Bones,” or some daring teacher could grow a pair and get creative and hum a few bars of this Reek of Putrefaction retch fest to acquaint eager young minds with the wonders hidden in their own viscera. Educators, if you truly think the children are our future, you owe it to them.

Erupted thoracic savies - serum, pus and offal
Perspiring ulcerous chancre - splattered on your wall
Necro-cellular lesions - the stench of staining scabsS
craped up by medics, and wrapped in plastic bags
Exploding pus and bile, abdominal saliva sprays
Coughing out your intestines, and rubbing them in your face
Carbuncles oozing sanguous, mortified entrails and rot
Pieced together for autopsy, in your wooden box
Frantic pelvic gut-wrench
Splattered guts and gore
Seeping disembowelment
Mopped up off the floor
Pelvic insides now rest in your perineum
Splattered gore seeping from your orifices like hot sebum
Pancreatic juices
Internal digestive mess
Acidic dripping spittle
And squelching moist flesh
Pulverized thoracic cavity
Your rib-cage is snapped
Rupturing internal organs
Crushed in your diaphragm
Your lungs are collapsed
As your abdominal cavity is splattered
Terminal back-ache paralysing
As your spine is shattered

Thoracic – adj. pertaining to the chest cavity.
Savies – once again Carcass has stumped me. Medical community, feel free to jump in on this one.
Chancre – n. a syphilis lesion.
Carbuncle – n. a painful subcutaneous inflammation.
Sangous – not actually a word, but sang is the Latin root for blood so I’ll assume that’s where they were heading with that one.
Perineum – n. the area in front of the anus. You affectionately know it as the taint.
Sebum – n. the fatty secretion of the sebaceous glands.

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: Oct. 8, 2008

Now here’s a true gem from Carcass’ magic murder bag, “Pyosisified (Rotten to the Gore)” is a (I think, grammatically incorrect) classic brutally ripped from Reek of Putrefaction. While there may be one too many syllables in the word pyosisified, the song itself is a heart warming tale of posthumous pus formation that for some reason has not become a staple on the funeral circuit. Go figure.

The lingering scirrhus begins to harden
As the insides fall prey to putrefaction
Rotting tissue turns to mush and pulp
As your mind is torn by encephalitis
Your cavities rot with ulcers
Your infected inflammations torn
Your gizzards eaten by incursive decay
You're infernally rotten to the gore...
Juices digested from each pus-swollen pore
Insatiable hunger as I feast on the gore
Nothing gives me greater pleasure
Than a bowlful of chyme
Maggot infested kidneys
Are what I choose every time
The smell of plaguing infection
Is nauseatingly emetic
Prolonged spumescence of stale pus
Stinks like hot, putrid vomit
Your body is indurate
The insides are black as tar
Your innards gnawed by septic hate
Now a mass of empyaema
Your blood is caked
Dried and inconsistent
Your bloody rotten goreIs now vitrescent

Pyosis – n. the formation of pus.
Scirrhus – n. a dense cancer.
Encephalitis – n. an inflammation of the brain.

I think we can all agree Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a classic on par with Citizen Kane (if you don’t, you’re in the wrong place). But some of Hooper’s later work, to be generous, has been a tragi-comic tour through the world of EPIC FAIL. Case in point, 1995’s The Mangler, an adapted Stephen King story about a laundry folding machine with a taste for erythrocytes, as Carcass would dub them.
The real problem, for me, was apparent from the outset with King’s story. Who of us regularly comes into contact with a laundry folding machine? It’s way too abstract to the average human existence. Maniacal cars that want you all to yourself, that’s something most of us can wrap our brains around.
So Stephen, if you’re reading, let me give you an idea ripped straight from
Reek of Putrefaction: There are few things more horrific than an office microwave, the poorly cleaned locus of most virulent strains of workplace pathogens. Just to up the queasy factor, taking your shmutz encrusted office microwave and try to use it to gestate a baby as Carcass suggested with “Mircrowaved Uterogestation.”
Unfortunately, some
retard in Ohio ignored the obligatory “do not try this at home” warning.

Fomentatious perflation hydrogenates your foetal cistern
Coagulating haemorrhage and your congenital hernia
Dehydrated soup – crumbling hygroma
Pectified
sludge – dank, acrid aroma
Clotting uteral mucus, dissipating your foetus
Melting your uterus and evaporating your cyesis
Your foetus is reconstituted by warm, molten enzymes
Slowly digested in a microwaved slime
Your stomach is churning, heat effervescing your succus
Your innards running like hot, sticky mucus
Mangled uterogestation, your perimetrium clots
Your inside cooking, steaming and hot

Foment – v. to encourage rebellion or discord
Perflate – v. to blow through
Hydrogenate – v. to add hydrogen to a molecule
Coagulate – v. to congeal from a liquid into a thickened mass
Congenital – adj. inborn, a condition present a birth
Hernia – n. the protrusion of an organ through its surrounding tissues, particularly in the abdomen
Hyrgroma – n. a collection of cerebrospinal fluid without blood
Pectate – v. to turn tissues into a salt of pectic acid
Cyesis – n. pregnancy
Effervesce – v. to give off bubbles of gas
Succus – n. a fluid secreted by tissues
Perimetrium – n. the outer layer of the uterus

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: July 20, 2008

A liver destroying ditty about boozing yourself to death by master gore hounds Carcass? I’ll drink to that. One of the Liverpudlian medicalmalpractioners’ great non-album tracks, "Hepatic Tissue Fermentation" (in versions I and II) is a cirrhotic tour through your liver’s last days that just might make you rethink your Friday night plans.

Orally force fed, until cirmosis is induced,
Fatal renal failure, bleeds like a sluice,
Spewing blood as the gallbladder extrudes,
Alcoholic poisoning, bloated lobules burst,
Toxins flood the stomach, in diffluence submerged.
Coughing waste as the wrecked colon tears.
The blood now critically proof, neural cells fatally quenched,
Drowning in spilt retention, hepatic tissue ferments.
Poisoned retention, with intoxication,
Inflamed nephrons burst, your condition's getting worse,
Chronically diffused, your liver you will lose.
Bodily distillation, as emerged flesh reacts,
With alcoholic contents, in your urinary tract.
Dripping fluid as the decrepit appendix weeps.
Matter turns to fluid, intoxicating ablution,
Biliary dehydration, innards to solution.
Bleeding urine as the inflamed bladder rips.
The blood now critically proof, neural cells fatally quenched,
Drowning in spilt retention, hepatic tissue ferments.
Contamination, foul circulation.
Alcohol force fed, goes straight to your head,
Brain tissue damaged, fused with alcohol sewage.
In a stupor you die, your brain lobes you fry.

Cirmosis – Carcass stumped me on this one. Despite my best efforts, I have no clue. In fact, Google it and all you get is page after page of links to Carcass lyrics. If there are any MDs out there who can explain this one, lemme know.
Sluice – n. a gate used to control water flow.
Lobules – n. small lobes or sections of lobes.
Diffluence – v. the act of flowing.
Hepatic – adj. of or pertaining to the liver.
Nephron – n. the filtering and excretory portion of the kidney.

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: June 22, 2008

Spitting LSD on unsuspecting people as a DIY form of MKULTRA is an idea so twisted Merry Prankster Ken Kesey, who was cuckoo for acid puffs, would smile in approval. Carcass drummed up this particular electric Kool-Aid acid test on Necroticism with the ditty “Lavaging Expectorate of Lysergide Composition” where they unleashed some particularly clever adjectives on an unsuspecting world.

Officinal – immiscible compounds are mixed
A gagging expectorate of lysergic acids
Premensely emerced, consciousness slowly strips
Percolated in an ebriating narcosis
Cataleptic … Imbibe … Neutropsick
Neurally numbed a narcosis so trans-lucid
So pernicious hallucinogenics
Procreating ocular contortion
Your idiosyncrasy is now expropriated
Extirpation … Mind … Termination

Officinal – adj. Kept in stock in a drug store.
Immiscible – adj. Incapable of being mixed.
Expectorate – n. Spit or phlegm.
Premensely – Not actually a word as far I can tell.
Emerced – Also not a word I can find.
Ebriating – Shortened version of inebriating.
Catalpetic – adj. Paralyzed, in a condition associated with catatonic schizophrenia.
Neurotropic – adj. Having an affinity for nerve tissue and cells.
Pernicious – adj. Causing harm.
Expropriate – v. To take from someone’s possession for one’s own use.
Extirpate – v. To totally remove as by pulling from the roots.

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: April 23, 2008

Cooking and cannibalism – two great tastes that taste great together. Around G&P HQ we enjoy a good cooking show, especially peripatetic curmudgeon Anthony Bourdain who has not met a hog ass he didn’t enjoy or a situation he couldn’t bitch about. But somehow Bourdain has so far drawn the line at sampling the other other white meat. So scratch him for your fantasy Cannibal Holocaust remake. But Carcass set their sardonic pens to the topic on “Pedigree Butchery,” a standout track from 1992 touchstone Necroticism – Descanting the Insalubrious, a tune that features some exemplary medical dictionary abuse and a few of Jeff Walker’s trademark neologisms.

In caustic butchery I parent my dominion
In the food chain I forge the missing link
Cold temerity confects this splintered forage
Infantile corruption taken to the brink

Making hash of the spumous erubescent
All natural compassion removed
The newly fully developed boiled as sprouted fodder
Matrilineal murder – cordon bleu

A salubrious pet food
Human midden is consumed

Not one to mince my words
But how I love to see these siblings churned
In tins they are reared

Ghastly, I slake
Bestial appetites to sate
As flesh and steel I mate
To fill the lower species’ plate

Desparental, primparal goods oozing
The bawling, squabbling denied the suckling teat
Sentient bloodletting sprains the sporulate
Makes a choice chimerical treat

Rheological, twisted nursery chymes
The fluxing of the defleshed
Paedophilosophical, carnage knowledge
As the illigitimeat to the domesticated is fed

So as you breed
They will bleed

Contumely calorie count
Ebullient death toll mounts
Higher and higher

Despumating the midden, the desipient I segment
Pertaining vitality, their dispatch I cement
Serve out for minion in their feeding trough

Caustic – adj. Capable of burning or corroding flesh.
Temerity – n. Recklessness, boldness.

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: Mar. 23, 2008

Following up on our recent foray into dental abuse, G&P returns to Reek of Putrefaction and faces yet another of our deep seated fears: going blind. Cuz, ya know, Zatoichi, we are not.
Carcass made ingenious hay out of a subject that frankly gives us the heeby jeebies. “Carbonized Eyesockets” is a ferocious yet wordy little ditty about melting somebody’s eyes closed. Now keep that open flame away from our face.

The pungent aroma of hot, bubbling, molten gristle
Blends with the stench of hot, singeing flesh soldered to liquid muscle
As the cornea is pierced and fried on the sizzling retina
Burning and spitting on the now blacked, charred fovea

Holes of crumbling carbon are all that are left
Charred eye sockets of hot, scorched flesh

Fusing symblepharon, your flesh turns to coke
Extrav[o]asative gunge now black, pungent smoke
Charred eye sockets – horrifically pernicious
Your sight irreparable by your optician

Once flowing blood is now dried, resembling black pudding
Now all that bleeds is a slow trickle of hot, sticky muscle
The sclera is a lump of carbon burning on smoldering membrane
Your eyeballs are blistered, your optic nerves now aflame

Fovea – n. a pit or depression in the bone
Symblepharon – n. a fusion of the eyelids
Vasoactive – n. a drug that can cause veins and arteries to expand or contract

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: Mar. 8, 2008

For the last month G&P has encountered just about every conceivable impediment to getting what a dentist and an endodontist have so far said should be a simple root canal. Complications, confusion and chaos abound. So currently our #7 incisor is filled with what a specialist called “dental Drano.” Yeah, that can’t be good. Long story short, if a dentist says, “Huh, you might wanna get that checked out,” don’t wait a decade to take him up on that sage advice.
Shockingly, gorehounds Carcass never really strip mined that particularly bit of bodily discomfort for our oozing, slobbering horror. Cinema, on the other hand, has never demurred from that particular topic. Exhibits A through C: Marathon Man, Oldboy and *shudder* Teeth.
But back to Carcass. The closest the Liverpudlian loudmouths got to the topic was Reek of Putrefaction’s absolute classic “Oxidized Razor Masticator,” which, unfortunately for our purposes, went a little easy on the $10 words, but we’ll make due with what we’ve got.

Chomping and splicing, your gums sliced to shreds
Tattered bloody ribbons, incisored skin is shed
Scraping on sore teeth, cracking and chipping
Shredding and mincing raw nerve endings…
…
Gaping and sore
The rusty razors bore
Skin hangs and seeps
Peptic ulcers bleed
Your mouth a sea of cartilage, rabid saliva bleeds
Swallowing shredded tongue and pulverized, crunching teeth
Respirating a bolus of rusty razor blades
Asphyxiating bloody garotte, tearing your jugular vein

Incisor – n. one of four anterior teeth in the mouth used for gnawing
Peptic – adj. relating to digestion
Respire – v. to breathe
Bolus – n. a small mass of chewed food
Garotte – n. a length of cord used to kill by strangulation

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: Feb. 10, 2007

With Valentine's Day in less than a week, it's never a better time to remind ourselves our loved ones are little more than future carrion, destined to rot away. Carcass dwelled heavily on life's seeming pointlessness on Necroticism's third track, "Symposium of Sickness," which really, c'mon should have been the title track to Symphonies of Sickness. That or somebody just got lazy with titles. Either way, nihilism never looked so wordy.
An encloaking, dark epoch
In which all life is not appraised
Another valueless commodity
On which the rapacious may feebly graze
Indebted homage to their mammon
Whilst the mort is the music of the meek
Transcendence from a beautifully brutal reality
Is what we seek

Noxious, sully dolour
Is not the sentiment upon which we feed
But precocious consciousness
Draws out a morbid nous to bleed
Chiselling out seething words
Which cut deep to the bone
Always legible
So be it on our own headstone

Rising to our nadir
Reality we try to extirpate
Trying to raise a twisted smile
Similar to that silver plate
On a coffin which is joined
Hammering in each final nail
Last kill and testament
Left now intestate

Noxious, sully dolour
Is not the thesis which is bled
A precarious train of thought
In which mental cattle trucks are led
Carving out skillful words
Always spelt out well
We can't just leave the dead alone

A terminal doctrine of diseased minds perplexed
Enunciated epigrams

Epoch -- n. A particular period of history.
Dolour (American English, dolor) -- n. Sorrow or grief

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar Jan. 10, 2007

We all know Carcass was able to throw out a slew of sesquipedalian words like few other metal heads, but the Birmingham grinders were not infallible. “Pedigree Butchery” on Carcass touchstone Necroticism – Descanting the Insalubrious mixes actual SAT prep vocab with a the occasional misspelling and words of dubious origin. Every test taker knows, when in doubt, just fill in the bubble for C and move on.
"Desparental, prim[i]paral goods oozing
The bawling, squabbling denied the suckling teat
Sentient bloodletting sprains the sporulate
Makes a choice chimerical treat"

Desparental – a Carcass creation and not a real word, but we assume it relates to one’s parentage.
Primiparal – adj. (misspelled in the lyric sheet and the word is actually primiparous. Time to hit those books, Mr. Walker) of or relating to a woman who has borne a single child or is pregnant for the first time.
Suckling – v. nursing at the breast or udder
Sentient – adj. Thinking, conscious.
Sporulate – v. To produce spores.

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: Dec. 16, 2007

What happens to you after you die? The question has plagued mankind since our ancestors began roaming the Serengetti about 50,000 years, eking out a haphazard existence. Luckily for enlightened modern sophisticates such as us, the theologians in Carcass have the answer for you: you rot and turn into goo.
The high priests of goregrind expound upon life’s aftermath in
Symphony of Sickness’ “Cadaveric Incubator of Endo-parasites.” So once again, we crack open ye olde medical dictionary.

ulcerous – adj. afflicted with ulcers
saponify – v. to convert fat into soap using an alkali
rennin – n. a coagulating enzyme in a calf’s stomach used to curdle milk during the cheese making process
autolysis – n. the breakdown of plant or animal tissues by enzymes contained in the affected tissues, self-digestion

"The inset of rigor mortis, ulcerous corruption and decay
Saponified fats lather as soap as you slowly eat yourself away
Organs savaged by rotten enzymes, rennin and rancorous cysts
A festering abcess immersed in ravenous autolysis…."

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar Nov. 20, 2007

Just because Carcass dropped the gore that doesn’t mean they jettisoned their dictionaries as well. Quite the opposite. The second track on Heartwork, “Carnal Forge” crams an entire SAT prep course into a single 3:55 song. So get your No. 2 lead pencils because we're about to hit the books.

Mulitfarious carnage
Meretriciously internecine
Sublime enmangling steelbath
Of escheated atrocities

Enigmatic longanimity of ruminant mass graves
Meritorious victory into body bags now scraped

Regnant fleshpiles
The dead regorged
Osculatory majestic wrath
This carnal forge

Desensitized to perspicuous horror
Dehumanized fresh cannon fodder

Meritorious horror
Perspicuous onslaught
Dehumanized cannon fodder

Killing sanitized
Slaughter sanctified
Desensitized to genocide

Reigning corpsepiles
Death regorged

Sousing bloodbath
Carnage forged

In the cold, callous dignity of the mass grave

Multiferocious carnage
Cruel, mendacious creed
Sublime murderous bloodbath
Of fiscal atrocities

Inexorable mettle in redolent consommé
An opprobrious crucible of molten human waste

Priapismic deathpiles
Infinitely regorged
The smelting butchery
Of the carnal forge

Desensitized to pragmatic murder
Dehumanized into cannon fodder

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar: Oct. 29, 2007

Today we have a Carcass twofer from a song and an album that could both use some translation.

Uliginous – adj. Growing in swamps or muddy soil
Quiescient – adj. Motionless, inactive
Spelling will count on the quiz:
“Such a perplexing task,
To fit the remains in the casket
Uliginous mass so quiescient…”

Carcass Word of the Day Calendar Oct. 21, 2007

Carcass had the best vocabulary, cribbed from medical texts, in the underground short of Bad Religion. In this periodic feature, we did into the grindsters' word hoard, so you're ready the next time pyosis pops up in casual conversation at a cocktail party.

Pediculous – n. In pathology, the state of being infested with lice
Used in a sentence:
“I devour the pediculous corpse,
Whetting my palate as I exhume,
The festering stench of rotting flesh,
Makes me drool as I consume”
“Exhume to Consume” on Symphonies of Sickness
